How To: Leveraging Kentik for Network Performance Visibility

What do you need to see to manage your network’s performance? Kentik’s approach is to present the data, as you need it, to fit organizational needs. Kentik’s AIOps platform for network professionals benefits both service providers and enterprises by letting users define any analytics visualization as a panel that can be added to a dashboard. Choose a preset for traffic, BGP, performance, or security/DDoS, and then easily tailor multiple panels for your environment. Panels can be locked to specific time-ranges, devices, and filters or configured dashboard-wide. Simply start by building a panel view in Kentik’s Data Explorer and save it as a dashboard panel. If that seems too intimidating, take a look at Kentik’s library of Preset Dashboards to help you get started.

Preset Dashboards for Network Performance

Live Network Flow Data

Real-time Network Data Collection

Dashboards are continuously updated as network data is received in real-time, making it possible to respond sooner to issues like DDoS attacks or congestion hot spots. Where is traffic coming from and going to? How fast is it transiting your infrastructure? Are there choke points where links are congested or traffic isn’t balanced? Kentik Detect visualizes the way you see flow data by continually ingesting multiple types of data such as NetFlow, sFlow, IPFIX, SNMP, BGP, and many others then presenting it using a comprehensive set of configurable dashboards. Set your time window, select a device or devices, and choose the metric you’d like displayed. Kentik’s dashboards show you precisely what you most need to know.Subscribing to the Dashboard allows you to get a schedule email with the dashboard as a PDF attachment.

Anomaly Detection

Anomaly Detection and Alerting

Is a given traffic pattern normal or an anomaly? Traditional visibility systems offer only crude and inaccurate tools for making that determination. But Kentik’s powerful, granular detection lets you find and analyze anomalies so you can minimize false positives and resolve issues faster. Create multiple alerts with individual notification channels using email, Slack, PagerDuty and other third-party APIs. Customize each alert’s thresholds and monitoring criteria using multi-dimensional grouping, pinpoint filtering, and flexible metrics. Automate tracking and adaptive baselining of top-N elements. Tune both anomaly evaluation frequency and lookback periods for historical baselining. With Kentik you won’t be relying on guesswork to address anomalous conditions.

Data Explorer

Beyond visualizing current network data in dashboards, Kentik also lets you deep dive into the details, both current and forensic. Kentik’s Data Explorer lets you explore raw data—actual collected flows rather than summaries—from any time frame in the last 90 days with longer retention available for those customers who require it. You can focus on an individual device or any combination of devices. You can zero in on any of over 20 metrics like packets per second, bits per second, unique IP addresses and more via categories including ASN, geo, port, IP, interface, VLAN, MAC address, and more. You can also apply any combination of filters chosen from more than 25 different parameters. With power visualizations like times-series graphs, pie charts, matrix, and geo heatmaps combined with fast, powerful drill-down, Kentik is the shortest route to detailed answers for crucial network questions.

Flexible Data Access

Data in Kentik Detect isn’t locked in a proprietary format or limited to Kentik portal view, since data can be readily accessed using Kentik’s powerful REST APIs. Kentik APIs enable programmatic access to Kentik Detect Engine-stored data for a variety of purposes, including integration with existing network monitoring tools, backend datastore integration, and augmentation of custom customer portals. This opens the possibility to integrate with third-party systems for capabilities such as DDoS mitigation or business intelligence.

APIs for Third Party Integrations

For service providers: Kentik Data Explorer’s REST API can be used to differentiate from competitors especially as part of a managed network monitoring service offering.

For enterprises: Kentik Data Explorer’s REST API can tie in with external business systems to provide value-added analytics that embrace digital business operations.
