Global ISP Cogent Communications Selects Kentik for Network Traffic Intelligence

SAN FRANCISCO – March 14, 2018 – Kentik, the only SaaS-based network traffic intelligence company, today announced it has been selected by Cogent Communications Holdings, Inc., one of the largest internet service providers (ISPs) in the world, to automate traffic engineering, optimize network performance, and uncover new revenue opportunities. Five of the 10 largest global Tier-1 ISPs now leverage the network traffic intelligence platform, Kentik Detect.

“We selected Kentik because it helps us achieve our goal of reducing the cost of high-quality bandwidth while maintaining the most optimal network performance and experience for our customers,” said Dave Schaeffer, CEO of Cogent. “Kentik Detect is easy to use, making it a great resource for several groups within our organization. The platform is also engineered by a knowledgeable team with deep industry experience who continuously roll out valuable new features to help ISPs like us turn network data into business intelligence.”

Some of the key use cases Cogent will leverage include:

  • Instant traffic queries for optimized network performance and faster MTTI / MTTR: With Kentik’s easy-to-use interface, flexible filtering and output options, and fast query response times, ISPs can make quick work of day-to-day service assurance tasks. With the platform’s high-powered big data backend, investigating traffic anomalies like congestion, abuse, outages, or route leaks can be done in seconds rather than minutes or hours.
  • Automated traffic engineering: Beyond arming operations personnel with better, faster data, Kentik enables ISPs to convert traffic engineering workflows into fully automated processes. With Kentik’s extensive APIs, ISPs can programmatically identify interfaces or PoPs that are approaching capacity, find top contributors, and automatically push policies that reroute a portion of the traffic to avoid customer impact from congestion.
  • Real-time sales prospecting: Using Kentik Detect, ISPs can pull insights from their NetFlow and BGP data to identify traffic flows that are transiting their networks to or from networks that aren’t yet their customers. Kentik Detect’s customizable dashboards and alerting provide self-service access for sales teams who can then utilize the data to help gain new prospects, or find new revenue opportunities with existing customers. Kentik makes these types of analyses easy to pull via REST APIs, so ISPs can link the data with their marketing automation stack to create deeper sales process integration.

“Cogent is one of the original, largest, and most pervasive service providers on the planet, and we are thrilled to be able to work with them as they operate and grow their business,” said Avi Freedman, co-founder and CEO of Kentik. “ISPs are the backbone of the internet, so it’s critical that they’re armed with real-time network traffic intelligence to maintain the highest level of performance, availability, and security. As Cogent joins our growing customer base, we remain committed to providing all ISPs, service providers, and enterprises with a fast, easy-to-use platform to drive streamlined technical operations and real business results. We look forward to working with the Cogent team and to hearing about the ROI they gain from our platform.”
