Another Internet Disruption in Cuba Following Week of Protests

The nation of Cuba experienced another Internet disruption today as traffic to and from Cuba dipped by 47% between 13:55 UTC (9:55am local) to 17:10 UTC (1:10 pm local).

Until very recently, large internet outages were very rare. Internet shutdowns are new to Cuba in 2021 but Sunday’s wasn’t the first. There was an outage in January that appeared to be government-directed following additional protests motivated by the 27N movement.

In addition, the Open Observatory has documented censorship targeting Signal, Telegram and Whatsapp.
