As network and service operators and developers, we’ve spent our entire professional lives designing and running large-scale networks and CDNs. With decades of experience, we know the shortcomings of available tools. What we always wanted — but never found — was an infrastructure visibility solution that’s scalable, powerful, easy to use, and affordable. We started Kentik to create that solution.

What We Believe

  • Network data is essential for business optimization.

    Collection and analysis of network data is the best way to understand how to optimize a network-enabled business. From resource allocation to peering relationships to DDoS defense, effective visibility and analytics make operations more efficient, responsive, and profitable.

  • Today’s network tools require scalable architecture.

    With traffic volume growing fast, network visibility must scale in order to monitor traffic across every network device, make flow data available in seconds, and allow querying at any granularity over any time-frame. The only architecture with the speed and capacity to scale affordably is big data-based SaaS.

  • A unified view speeds resolution and cuts costs.

    When blockages or attacks impact availability and performance, delays cost revenue and customers. Because switching between multiple tools is slow and inefficient, operators need a single store for all types of infrastructure data, and a unified environment for visibility, analytics, and alerting.

  • Open integration makes network data more valuable.

    Data that’s locked behind proprietary walls can’t be reached by external systems that analyze and correlate for additional insights. Visibility solutions should instead embrace integration via APIs and open standards, allowing the investment in data collection to be leveraged for maximum value.

  • Effective solutions start with user-focused design.

    The best solutions come from vendors that know the pain points in existing approaches and understand what users need to get the job done. A system informed by day-after-day, year-after-year experience is a system that’s much more likely to consistently and efficiently meet the needs of actual users.

    Networks are all about providing instant access. So it shouldn’t take weeks to get a network intelligence system installed, or cost a fortune for equipment or custom configuration. SaaS solutions enable sign up in minutes while sidestepping the burdens of capital outlay and ongoing system maintenance.

Avi Freedman

Co-founder, CEO

Avi has decades of experience as a leading technologist and executive in networking. He was with Akamai for over a decade, as VP Network Infrastructure and then Chief Network Scientist. Prior to that, Avi started Philadelphia's first ISP (netaxs) in 1992, later running the network at AboveNet and serving as CTO for ServerCentral.

Dan Ellis

CTO

Dan is a multi-disciplined engineer and leader with over 25 years of startup and corporate experience. Dan was responsible for one of the world’s largest CDNs as Director of Content Delivery Operations at Netflix. He was previously CTO for 14 years at multi-state ISP PenTeleData. Dan holds a BS in computer science from PSU.

Justin Biegel

Co-founder, VP Sales

Justin has over 10 years of experience working in technology sales and helping to grow infrastructure companies. Responsible for sales in Northern California and the Pacific Northwest at Internap, Justin led his regions to record-breaking performance. Justin graduated with honors from DePaul University with a BA in Economics.

Ian Pye

Co-founder, Principal Engineer

Ian joined Kentik from CloudFlare, where he was the first employee and wrote many backend systems. He previously worked for UBS Investment Bank in London as well as for several startups. Ian has an MS in Computer Science from UC Santa Cruz, where he investigated distributed file systems, and a BA from Colorado College.

Jim Frey

Jim has over twenty years experience in the network management tools and technology sector, in roles ranging from product manager to marketing executive to industry analyst. Most recently, he was VP of Research with Enterprise Management Associates, and before that he was VP of Marketing at NetScout Systems.

Alex has over twenty years experience in network infrastructure and management tools, in product management and marketing roles. Most recently, he was VP of Marketing at QualiSystems, and before that he was VP of Marketing at Packet Design.
