Internet Outage in New Zealand triggered by cyberattack response

New Zealand’s third largest telecom went offline for almost an hour earlier today reportly due to a cyberattack.

According to Kentik aggregate NetFlow data, Internet traffic to and from Vocus NZ (AS9790) stopped at 1:20 UTC (1:20pm local) and didn’t begin to recover until 2:06 UTC. It wasn’t until 2:25 UTC (2:25pm local) before traffic levels had returned to normal.

According to Reuters, the outage occurred as a consequence of fending off a DDoS attack against one of its customers. Impact of the outage was also visible in the IODA measurement platform from CAIDA.
