BGP Routing Leak Causes Spike of Misdirected Traffic

On 3 June 2021, Russian telecom CIREX (AS199599) leaked thousands of BGP routes, misdirecting traffic for destinations around the world.

First spotted by our friends over at Qrator Labs, the BGP leak affected companies from countries around the world. Aggregated Kentik netflow data, depicted in the attached graphic, revealed a large spike in traffic volume directed through AS199599 showing the operational impact of the latest routing snafu.
