Kentik Detect doesn’t box you into a single traffic flow protocol, data record type, or device supplier. Instead we auto-detect and ingest flow data — NetFlow (v5, v9), sFlow, IPFIX, RFlow, J-Flow, and cflowd — from nearly every brand of router or switch, including Cisco, Juniper, and Brocade as well as white box vendors. We also support traffic data from devices such as firewalls, load balancers, and network packet brokers like Gigamon. And we collect SNMP data to correlate flows to devices and interfaces.

BGP and GeoIP

BGP and GeoIP

Kentik Detect peers with your edge or internal routers to receive live eBGP/iBGP updates. Routing information includes source, destination, AS (next hop, 2nd hop, 3rd hop), and path. At ingest, source and destination IPs from each flow record are matched against the BGP RIB and enhanced with BGP data (next hop IP/CIDR, route prefix and length, community, etc.) as well as with GeoIP (city, region and country). All enhanced flow fields are fully indexed to speed response to ad-hoc queries.

Network performance metrics

Network performance metrics

For hosts, Kentik Detect uses nProbe agent software to collect not only flow records but also pcap-derived network performance data. Unlike traditional probe appliances, nProbe is cloud- and container-friendly, and can be deployed for application and load-balancing servers. Providing host metrics — including network and application latency, TCP retransmits, fragments, and out of order packets — for ad-hoc analysis, dashboards, and anomaly detection, nProbe makes Kentik Detect a powerful network performance monitoring solution.

Data transit and security

Data transit and security

Kentik supports multiple deployment modes so you can choose how your network data gets to the Kentik Data Engine in the cloud. You can send data from network devices directly using https. You can use our proxy agent to gather and encrypt data for transit. Or, if you’re in an Equinix data center, you can use a PNI cross-connect. Alternatively, if regulatory or security constraints preclude the use of a public cloud SaaS, you can arrange for Kentik Detect to be deployed as an on-premises cluster.
